Can Fake Flowers Get Moldy?

It’s not uncommon for artificial flowers to have a musty smell. One common reason is not being stored in a cool, dry place, which can trigger the growth of mold and fungal spores that create a bad smell. You may not be able to see these spores with your naked eye because they are so small.

However, you will notice the smell when you start arranging your flowers. Worst of all, trying to dust the flowers can make the smell worse because you will release the spores into the air. While spraying silk flowers with air freshener may help, it’s only temporary.

In this article, we’ll share with you how to remove musty odors from silk flowers by killing the mold and fungi that cause the odor. By far the best way to do this is to clean your artificial plants regularly with a damp, clean microfiber cloth. If you really want to try other methods, here are a few more. As with all cleaning methods, try it on a small, inconspicuous area first to make sure it won’t cause damage to ants.

How to Remove Musty Odors from Silk Flowers

Using Vinegar and Lemon Juice
Take a clean, dry surface, cover it with white paper, and place your silk flowers on it. You can also use old shopping bags to clean artificial flowers, such as silk flowers, but you must place the printed side down.
Mix one cup of water, half a cup of white vinegar, and one teaspoon of lemon juice in a clean, dry spray bottle.
Cover the bottle and shake it vigorously to mix the ingredients.
Spray the prepared mixture on the silk flowers. Make sure to extend the spray to the petals where fungus and mold may be present. The mixture contains acidic properties from vinegar and lemon juice, which can attack fungus and mold. After spraying, let the flowers dry on their own.
If the musty smell persists, repeat the spray a second time.
Using vinegar and water
If you have a silk flower that has been stored for a long time and now has a musty, damp smell, you can do the following:

Mix one cup of white vinegar in 1 quart of warm water.
Place the silk flower in the mixture and soak it thoroughly.
Rinse and dry.
If the smell persists, repeat the process.
