Artificial garlands and wreaths, artificial trees, and Christmas lights are some of the most basic items used for outdoor Christmas decorations. They are beautiful, versatile, and come in nearly every color combination to match any style of holiday decor.
Depending on their quality and quantity, these items can cost a pretty penny, so it is important to purchase the right decorations to meet all of your outdoor decorating needs. There are a few things you should consider before actually purchasing that will save you money and time this holiday season.
Consider Heat and Humidity
Artificial garlands and wreaths are made of materials that can withstand moderate heat and humidity. However, in rare cases, excessive heat and humidity in tropical areas can cause some decorations, such as artificial fruit, to fade and stain adjacent surfaces. Spraying these decorations with a UV protection spray available at hardware or craft stores may help prevent this discoloration. The filaments within incandescent Christmas lights will naturally wear out with normal operation. However, operating in areas of high heat and humidity will further accelerate the aging of the filaments, causing the lights to break down more quickly.
Consider the amount of sunlight
White garlands, wreaths, and trees are susceptible to the effects of the sun's UV radiation, causing the white leaves to turn yellow. In extreme cases, even indoor green artificial trees can fade in color if left next to a sunny window all season long. Christmas trees intended for outdoor use are specially treated with a UV-resistant coating to prevent fading and cracking.
Consider Average Snowfall
Most artificial wreaths and garlands are manufactured with durable materials and weatherproof coatings, allowing them to withstand environments with average snowfall. The longer incandescent Christmas lights are used, the hotter they get. Cold snow can also cause these lights to crack. It’s best to limit the amount of time these lights are run.
Consider Average Rainfall
The leaves on artificial wreaths and garlands can withstand the occasional shower. Avoid wreaths and garlands with small pieces and details that can blow or get knocked off.
Lifespan of a Garland
The leaves on high-quality artificial wreaths and garlands can last 7-10 years if used and stored properly. However, the lights on pre-installed light fixtures may need to be replaced every three years due to normal wear and tear. Outdoor artificial trees have to deal with harsher environments, so their lifespan is around 5-7 years with normal use.
