As a dog owner, you are probably well aware of how excited your dog gets at the mere mention of their favorite dog toy. Or how their tail wags faster when you bring home a new toy for them to play with. When we see how happy our dogs are, we feel just as happy.
Dog toys, especially natural dog toys, are essential for a variety of reasons. Ultimately, they provide a sense of enrichment in your dog's life, i.e. dog toys ideally stop your pup from chewing on your favorite mat (or shoes in our house!). They provide mental and physical stimulation, and depending on the toy, it can distract them, giving you enough time to do other work!
Dogs and their toys
Dog toys provide both physical and mental stimulation, as well as preventing destructive behavior and encouraging relaxation. Often, if a dog is stressed, playing with a new toy or snuggling with a familiar one can help keep them quiet, calm, and distracted.
The Importance of Play
Dogs should have a variety of appropriate dog toys available to them. This is not just to show how spoiled they are, but because it can help improve behavior. Toys are often used in training as a reward mechanism for being obedient and following commands. For example, this is a great way to start training a puppy to sit and stay – using toys as rewards and letting them chew and play after they’ve finished their job.
This also helps keep dogs active. Dogs need to use up a lot of the energy they have in them. Of course, nothing is more refreshing than a nice, invigorating walk, but dogs also love to play with their owners. For example, it’s fun to play with a rubber dog toy that squeaks every time they chew it in just the right position!
Dog toys also help keep dogs distracted and busy. This is important if you’re at work, or even if you work from home, and don’t have your dog around all day. They need to have something to play with, chase, chew, follow, etc. Otherwise, they get bored, and the alternative is chewing on things they shouldn’t, throwing your favorite shoes across the house, or even worse!
That’s why toys are great for killing boredom, especially dog toys that dispense treats (we love these, and so do our dogs!). The design of these toys focuses on providing mental stimulation and ways to relieve boredom, thereby (fingers crossed) reducing the risk of destructive behavior!
