Leaves add warmth and charm to your favorite space in any season. When ordering artificial garlands and wreaths, be aware that most come compressed and in a box. You'll need to shape the leaves to achieve the fullness you want. Learn quick and easy tips on how to fluff garlands and wreaths with our guide.
What are artificial garlands and wreaths made of?
Artificial garlands and wreaths are made of two materials. The first is PVC (polyvinyl chloride) and the second is PE (polyethylene).
PVC branches are made by cutting tree needles directly from sheets of PVC material, while PE branches are made through injection molding, using models made from real branches. This technique creates more realistic 3D branches, but no matter which material you choose, a good fluffing effect will create a pleasing garland.
How to Fluff Artificial Garland
After unpacking your wreath, start by laying it on a flat surface with the frame facing down. If the wreath is folded, you'll need to first unfold it and lock it in place. Each stem has a wire in the center that makes it easy to point the stems in any direction you want. First, separate them by lifting upward. If your garland includes a two-layer frame, start with the bottom layer and work your way up to the top layer. To create a natural shape, point the branches on the outer edge of the garland outward. For the branches on the inner edge, point them inward. The remaining branches in the middle can be pointed in different directions as needed. Work counterclockwise around the garland until the garland is fully fluffed, making sure to fill in any gaps if the garland's frame is exposed.
If you choose a pre-lit or pre-decorated garland, this doesn't have to be a hindrance. The lights are attached to individual branches, so they won't interfere with the fluffing process. Since the branches are bendable, you can always move them around the lights or decorations when needed.
Other decorations, such as pine cones, berries, and small balls, have bendable wire attached, so it's easy to remove them and rearrange them into your favorite pattern.
After fluffing your garland, stand and inspect it to make sure there are no gaps, exposed frames, or irregular stems that will detract from the beauty of your garland. Also, check to see if the decorations are too sparse or make the garland look messy.
How to Fluff Artificial Garland
Artificial garlands come in many shapes, perfect for decorating doorways, fireplaces, stairways, and more! Garlands come in many shapes, such as strips, curlicues, hanging baskets, and potted leaves. As for how to fluff an artificial garland, the process is similar to that of fluffing an artificial garland.
For thick garlands, such as our 6-foot Ultra Hybrid Pine Garland, flatten the strips first, making sure there are no bends in them, and that the spine is facing down, before you begin fluffing.
Start at one end and move toward the other, lifting and separating branches along the way.
If your garland will be hanging on a flat surface, it’s best to keep the branches on the back flat for better placement. Once you have your garland where you want it displayed, you can add any finishing touches.
If you can see both sides of your garland, make sure you point the branches in all directions to create a full effect. If you have pre-lit or pre-decorated garland, work from one end to the other to make sure there are no hidden Christmas tree decorations between the branches.
