If you wish to change the look of your vinyl figure by painting it, you must employ some important preparation techniques before you begin, otherwise the figure will begin to peel off the paint soon after it is painted. Since vinyl is a non-porous artificial surface, it is not suitable for accepting paint. Before the paint sticks to the figures, you have to sand them using a friction-based method. Also, a primer must be applied or the paint will peel over time.
Wash vinyl figures with soap. Use a coarse sponge to scrub any grooves and crevices. Rinse the figure with a rag or under the tap. Dry the vinyl figure with a clean towel.
Sand the vinyl figure with 220-grit sandpaper to improve adhesion. If necessary, use scissors to cut the sandpaper into smaller pieces. Do not stop sanding until the vinyl figure feels rough.
Move the vinyl figure to a well-ventilated area. If you must work in an enclosed indoor area, wear a respirator.
Place the figure on a piece of cloth. Tape off the parts of the vinyl figure that you don't want painted.
Spray a coat of acrylic spray primer over the worn vinyl figure. Place the primer can six to eight inches from the vinyl figure. Wait two hours for the primed vinyl figure to dry.
Use a craft brush to apply acrylic paint to the primed vinyl figure.
