How To Protect A Resin Statue?

When you choose to use one or more resins to decorate your outdoor space, you're making the right choice because resin is one of the most durable materials. Resin statues are lightweight, easy to move around, and come in a variety of shapes and sizes. They are usually painted with colors that will fade over time when exposed to the elements. But you can also choose to properly care for it, and apply a coat or two of clear protectant to keep the color of your resin statue pristine for years to come.

Pre-protection preparation

If you have been outside for a while before you decide to apply a protectant to your resin statue, it has probably accumulated at least a thin layer of dirt and grime. Before applying any protectant, gently clean the statue from top to bottom. Fill a bucket with a mixture of warm water and mild dishwashing liquid, and then wash the statue with a soft cloth, making sure to clean all crevices.

If necessary, use a soft-bristle brush to scrub nooks and crannies. Rinse the statue with water from a hose, without using a sprayer. Let the statue dry thoroughly.

Protective products

To protect the paint on your resin statue, you must use a product that has UV protection. You can choose a clear spray polyurethane product that is clearly marked as having UV protection. These products come in both glossy and matte finishes.

While UV sealers also come in liquid form and can be used to paint statues, these products can be thicker than sprays, resulting in a tacky surface. They also take longer to dry and are more likely to leave brush strokes during application.

Protectant Application

When it’s time to apply a spray protectant to your resin statue, choose a day with no wind or light breeze and low humidity. Set up shop outdoors in an open area so you can spray the statue without getting the spray on nearby items. Spread out newspaper to create an area much larger than the statue.

Shake the can vigorously and spray a thin, even coat over the entire statue from a distance of 12 to 24 inches. Allow the first coat to dry thoroughly before applying a second coat. If in doubt, consult with a professional in person.

Post-Protective Care

Once your resin statue is fully protected, there are still things you can do to preserve it and extend its life. Wash the statue regularly to keep it looking its best and remove accumulated dirt. Move the statue indoors when the temperature drops to freezing or below. When moisture accumulates on the statue, random freezing and thawing can cause cracks in the resin, damage the statue, and ruin the polyurethane coating.
