How To Tell If A Statue Is Resin?

Whether you're looking to buy or have a sculpture custom-made, it's helpful to know the difference between cast metal and resin ahead of time. Both materials are great choices for different reasons.

What is cast metal?

Cast bronze metal is an alloy of copper and tin that is formed using the traditional bronze casting method, the lost wax process - a method used by ancient Greek sculptors. The bronze is melted at extremely high temperatures and then poured into a ceramic mold.

The lost wax casting method is a highly skilled, complex, time-consuming, and labor-intensive process. Especially because bronze metal shrinks by up to 5% during the casting process. The skill required for casting, combined with the inherent value of bronze (which is made of copper and tin), results in relatively high prices for bronze sculptures.

Cast bronze sculptures can last indefinitely and are often viewed as an investment as the premier, most authentic sculptural material. If damaged, it is more difficult to repair than cold cast bronze, but is much less likely to be damaged due to its strength and durability.

What is cold cast bronze resin?

Bronze resin sculptures, also called "cold cast bronze" or bonded bronze, are made from real bronze powder that is mixed with polyester, epoxy or other resins and then poured into a reusable rubber mold. This is backed by very strong fiberglass and resin. Because real bronze powder is used in the surface, cold cast bronze can be tinted or colored to look very similar to cast bronze.

Cold cast bronze resin will last for over 35 years outdoors, and most will last 50 to 100 years. Depending on the shape, some cracking may occur over time. If water constantly collects in one area, cracks may occur when the water stays and then freezes. Cracks are also more likely to occur along seam lines. Cold cast bronze resin is relatively inexpensive to repair, but be sure to keep the artist's contact details as they may be able to help you arrange for repairs at their foundry or one in your country.

A well-treated indoor bronze resin will last indefinitely. It is more fragile than cast bronze, and a knock or drop can break or crack the delicate parts of the sculpture. However, it is also easily repaired and is an excellent bronze alternative. It is generally very durable and more affordable, often about half the cost of cast bronze.

Cold cast bronze resin is generally much lighter than cast bronze metal. But it can be filled to create a more solid or wind-resistant sculpture for the garden. For larger sizes, it is usually better not to fill the sculpture, as hollow sculptures are easier to move and can be made equally wind-resistant with internal stainless steel reinforcement and a subframe or steel fixings buried in the ground.
