Should I Limit My Dogs Toys?

It’s tempting to give your dog lots of different toys. After all, you love them so much, and what better way to keep them engaged than by giving them an exciting new toy every time you go to the pet store? No matter how well-intentioned your purchase is, this extravagance can cause your dog to start exhibiting bad behaviors and make training more difficult.
Choose the Right Toys
If you give your dog toys of all shapes and sizes, it can be hard for your dog to tell which toys are OK and which are not. If your living room is filled with soft toys that your dog can play with at will, he may not understand why you’d get mad at him for playing with slippers, magazines, or your child’s favorite soft toy. To him, they’re all the same!
Limit Your Dog’s Toy Access
If your dog has a certain toy that gets him excited, it’s best to keep it out of sight and only bring it out when you want to play with it. This prevents your dog from playing with the toy when he wants to, which could cause your dog to start associating the toy with bad behaviors, such as excessive barking or jumping around uncontrollably.
Giving a favorite toy as a special treat helps him know that you’re the owner, since you’re the one who brings him the toy and takes it away again. This also provides you with a great way to bond with your dog because he will be grateful that you gave him that toy. It becomes a special occasion rather than an everyday event that he may lose interest in over time.
Playtime vs. Training
It is important to differentiate between the toys you use during playtime and the toys you use during training. Your dog must learn which toys to associate with fun and casual play and which toys to associate with learning and focusing.
Dog vs. Soccer Ball
Choose a specific toy that you use only for training purposes. Balls are great training aids, or you can try a small toy that squeaks or has other noise-making capabilities that you can use to get your dog's attention.
We recommend against using rope toys because the string can be dangerous if your dog swallows it. After swallowing the string, the string can create a spring effect and block the stomach.
During training, make sure all "play" toys are out of sight and out of focus to avoid distraction. After the training session is over, remove the training toy and place it in a safe place where your dog cannot get to it. This lets your dog know that training time is over.
If you allow your dog to play with the training toy at any time, the toy will lose its authority in your dog's mind and will no longer be an effective training tool.
If you are doing different types of training, such as recalling behaviors for off-leash dogs on walks and for playing around other dogs, choose different toys for each type of training. This helps the dog associate a specific toy with the individual behavior you are teaching them, which speeds up the learning process.
