How are artificial plants made?
Artificial flowers and plants are made using a variety of materials, depending on the manufacturer and their chosen market. Typically, polyester is the fabric of choice for manufacturers because it is durable, low-cost, and able to absorb dyes and glues. It makes sense that the most durable, cheapest, and most adaptable materials would become the most popular over time. For high-end silk plants and flowers, silk, rayon, and cotton are the materials of choice. High-end manufacturers also use berries, dried flowers, and feathers. These are often made from tapioca or flour as they often emphasize using natural materials. Most leaves and petals use white silk, cotton, and rayon, regardless of what color they will eventually become. Fabric is die-cut into a variety of leaf and petal sizes and shapes to fit any type of plant or flower. These leaves and petals are dyed using cotton balls and paintbrushes. The artist applies the color to the leaves and petals, starting at the edges and moving toward the middle. The dyeing process for a single leaf can take a full hour.
The leaves and petals are placed in heated molds to set the shape, giving them their individual wrinkles, curves, and undulations. Some leaves and petals are reinforced with hand-inserted wire, after which glue is added to keep the wire in place.
Individual leaves are usually assembled individually, but several leaves may be needed to form a stem. When a bouquet or plant is to be made, the wire, which has been cut to a specified length, is covered with floral paper or self-adhesive tape. Finally, the assembler adds the flowers to the stem one by one, along with the smaller leaves.
What are the benefits of having artificial plants in your home?
Today, many artificial plants look so realistic that it's hard to tell if they're artificial. In addition to the obvious aesthetic advantages of artificial leaves, there are some benefits:
They don't trigger allergies. People who are allergic to certain plants may experience hay fever-like symptoms, such as itchy or watery eyes, runny noses, sneezing, and even fatigue. If a plant is artificially made rather than grown, it's less likely to cause irritation or discomfort to those with allergies. They don't require watering, pruning, fertilizing, or repotting, making them ideal if you don't have the time (or patience!) to care for a large number of indoor plants. Likewise, artificial plants allow you to go on vacation as often as you like, without having to ask a neighbor or relative to take care of your leafy friends! They look the same all year round. If you’re an owner of real plants, you’ll know that some plants thrive during certain seasons, while others look wilted and listless. Artificial plants are always vibrant, which means you can enjoy their leaves 365 days a year without any hassle! They’re non-toxic to pets. Certain seemingly harmless plants, such as peace lilies, elephant ears, devil’s ivy, and snake grass (mother-in-law’s tongue), can be toxic if ingested. If you have kids or pets around, you probably don’t want to worry about a trip to the hospital anytime soon! In this case, artificial plants are certainly a better choice. You can place an artificial plant in the darkest room of your home and it will still look great. With artificial plants and flowers, there’s no need to worry about sunlight and humid air, so you can decorate your home as you like!
