Difference between Indoor and Outdoor Plants
Gardening is the hobby of growing and nurturing plants. This habit can relieve our stress and relax our mind. Gardening is generally of two types. One is indoor gardening and the other is outdoor gardening. Indoor gardening refers to growing plants indoors such as in a home or office. Outdoor gardening is growing plants outdoors, in the open air.
There are some differences between indoor and outdoor gardening. These differences include:
Plant Species
Climate has a great influence on whether plants grow indoors or outdoors. Indoor plants require a controlled climate. Indoor plants can then grow indoors as the climate can be controlled and the environment can be manipulated to meet the requirements of the plant. Outdoor plants can withstand changes in climate and can grow in the open air.
Space Requirements
Indoor plants require less space to grow while outdoor plants require more space to grow. Unlike outdoor plants, indoor plants cannot grow to mature size. Its growth depends on the container in which the plant is grown. Its growth is limited by the container. The size of the container we choose for indoor growing depends on the space we have in our home or office.
Lighting
Every plant requires light but the amount of light required varies from plant to plant. Outdoor plants require more light, which can be obtained through sunlight, while indoor plants get light through windows. Light can also be provided to indoor plants by providing artificial light. Some indoor plants require very little sunlight and must be placed in the shade.
Water
Another difference between indoor and outdoor plants is the regulation of water. Indoor plants can water themselves, while outdoor plants get water regularly from rainwater. Adequate water should be provided to indoor plants. Excessive water can make indoor plants susceptible to fungi, which can cause plant damage, while outdoor plants will drain the excess water. Inadequate water supply can cause indoor plant roots to become bound by the container, while outdoor plants will continue to grow in search of water.
Soil Preparation
Soil preparation and maintenance is a complex process that is necessary for outdoor plants. Repeated planting reduces the nutrients in the soil. The soil in indoor gardening does not self-regulate as it does in outdoor gardening.
Fertilizers
Fertilizers are used to kill fungi that cause harm to plants. Fertilization and disease control have become more challenging these days. It is more difficult to fertilize indoor plants compared to outdoor plants. Indoor plants accumulate too much fertilizer, so fertilizers must be applied carefully to indoor plants. If any disease or fungus is found on indoor plants, it can be easily treated, while it is difficult to treat in outdoor plants.
