Artificial plants are imitations of natural plants used for commercial or residential decoration. They are sometimes made for scientific purposes. Artificial plants range from mass-produced varieties that can be distinguished from real plants by casual inspection, to highly detailed botanical or artistic specimens.
Materials used to make them include painted linen and dyed horn scraps from ancient Egypt, gold and silver from ancient Rome, rice paper from China, silkworm cocoons from Italy, colorful feathers from South America, and wax and colored shells. Modern techniques include sculpted or shaped soaps, nylon mesh stretched on a wire frame, clay, and injection molding for mass production. Polyester has been the primary material used in the manufacture of artificial flowers since the 1970s. Most artificial flowers on the market today are made of polyester fabric.
Five main processes can be distinguished:
1. is to put polyester fabric into gelatin to make it hard.
2. It is to cut various polyester fabrics and materials into shapes suitable for forming leaves, petals, etc.; this can be done with scissors, but more commonly it is done with a stamp, which can cut a dozen or more at a time thickness.
3. Print the texture of the leaves by dye screen printing, and give the petals a natural round shape by ironing in various shapes.
4. is to assemble the petals and other parts of the flower, building from the center outward.
5. is to mount the flowers on brass or wire stems wrapped with appropriately colored material and add leaves to complete the spray.
While the material most commonly used to make artificial flowers is polyester, both paper and fabric flowers are also made from origami.
The art of nylon flower making is an easy-to-learn craft that uses simple tools and inexpensive materials to achieve stunning results.
The basic materials needed to make nylon flowers include: metal wire, stem wire, nylon wire, nylon thread, flower ribbon and stamens. Some flowers require cotton balls or patches (or batting), white glue, acrylic paint, and a paintbrush.
Silk flowers are made from protein fibers spun by silkworms, producing lifelike flowers. Described as being made from silk using "real touch technology," the flowers are not made from silk but from polyester, polymers and plastics.
Clay flowers are handmade from special air-drying polymer clay or cold porcelain, steel wire, paint, glue, tape, and sometimes paper and foam as filler. Each flower has its own set of knives, with the help of which individual parts are cut out of the soft clay and then shaped using specially designed tools. Once dry, the parts are painted precisely where required and then assembled into a complete flower with great precision. When made by a skilled craftsman, clay flowers can be incredibly lifelike. From Thailand, where it was very popular, this art spread to Europe, Russia and the United States.
Injection molding is used for large-scale manufacturing of plastic flowers. Plastic is injected into a preformed metal mold.
