What Type of Toys Do Dogs Need?

Many behavioral problems in dogs are the result of boredom or excess energy. Toys can stimulate and enrich a dog's mind and body. Directing a dog's energy toward playing with toys can prevent or help solve problems such as digging and chewing furniture, shoes, or bushes.

Interactive Toys:

Toys that require owner involvement

Fetch toys - Many dogs enjoy chasing balls and Frisbees. Oddly shaped rubber toys that bounce and bounce make the game more fun. Frisbees come in many shapes and sizes, including floppy disks that fit better in a dog's mouth. Mechanisms for throwing balls increase the distance a dog must run to get the toy.

Distraction Toys:

These toys can keep your dog busy when you don't have time to play with him.

Treat-Dispensing Toys:

Designed to be used with kibble or small treats, the dog must manipulate the toy with his mouth and/or paws to get the treat to fall out.

Soft plush toys have many uses, but they are not suitable for all dogs. For some dogs, plush toys should be small enough to carry around. For dogs who want to shake or "kill" the toy, the size of the toy should be equal to the size of "prey" for that size dog.

Note:

Dirty clothing, such as old t-shirts, pillowcases, towels, or blankets, can be very comforting to dogs, especially if they have your scent on them! Be aware that diligent patting, carrying, and sniffing can ruin these items.
